Our Productive Day

I feel like we’ve had a very productive day, and it’s not even over yet!  How about that?!

First, I took half the kids to our favorite blueberry farm and picked some berries this morning.  It was pretty uneventful, unless you count watching the farm cat cough up a hairball and me having to relocate a Japanese beetle who had managed to fly up my skirt and begin pinching me on my __________ with its little buggy pincer legs.  Let’s just say I’m glad the bushes are rather dense in the area where we were picking and you can bet next time I’m wearing capris.

So, we got home and I started on canning a batch of blueberry syrup.  Got the jars all filled and placed in the water bath only to realize that the lemon juice was still in the measuring cup on the counter!  grrrr   So I had to undo everything I had just done and repeat it, this time with the lemon juice.  I had already started the timer, so I know it cost me exactly seven extra precious minutes of my time, but at least that mistake was fixable.  Wish they all were.

Meanwhile, I had sent the big boys out to pick beans, and they finished up just before the rain hit.  Yes, I said THE RAIN HIT!  Oh, thank you, Lord!  We have been desperate for rain here.  Last night we had ominous clouds, lots of wind and even thunder, but no rain.  Hope this puts some color back into the lawn and garden.

After lunch, I decided it was time to get off my feet.  I’ve been hobbling around since yesterday afternoon when my dermatologist liquid-nitrogened (yes, it’s a verb) a stubborn wart on the bottom of my foot.  (It’s not often I give you readers a glimpse into the details of this glamorous life of mine, but I’d say you’re really being treated today, aren’t you?)

With me needing to sit and the beans still needing dealt with, I decided to put the big boys to work again.  Yes, I know I could sit and deal with the beans, but I really couldn’t.  “Sitting” and “in the kitchen” are oxymorons for me!  You may think bean prep is mundane, but thankfully the boys turned it into a fun time AND with no injuries, despite their Ginsu-type antics.

Meanwhile, I snuggled up with Moriah and had myself a little power nap while she nursed.  And during those tranquil moments, I’m happy to report that not once did anyone bicker, come and ask me if I was asleep, bring me a ringing portable phone, or holler for help in the bathroom.  Not all my “naps” are so successful (which is why I don’t often bother trying—I’d rather just be sleepy than be sleepy and IRRITATED,) but oh, what a good power nap will do for you, so I’m glad I chanced it today!

Hope the second half of our day is just as productive as the first half.

  1. Jill,
Sounds like you and the gang have been working overtime! How wonderful!! You will enjoy your hard work this winter! YumYUM!!
On a side note. If you are freezing your beans, you can save alot of chopping or snapping if you pick them nice & young (when they are so yummy) then just blanch and freeze them whole. We have been doing beans this way for years and LOVE IT !!

    ENJOY !
    Laura
